By Jason B. Neola

The regional office of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Bicol distributed the Emergency Shelter Assistance (ESA) to 1,114 Nagueños whose houses were declared totally damaged because of Typhoon Rolly.

Aside from P10,000 ESA, the DSWD, in coordination with the City Social Welfare and Development Office of the Naga City, also gave each of the displaced residents with P3,100 as payment for cash for work.

The beneficiaries of this short-term intervention of the national government were left homeless after the Typhoon Rolly wrought havoc in the region on Nov. 1, 2020.

Lloyd Lara, Social Welfare Officer II of DSWD Disaster-based Management Division, said the grant of financial assistance in the total amount of P13,100 to each typhoon victim began last Aug 24 and will end on Aug. 27.

The DSWD has released P202 million for the implementation of the program in the province of Camarines Sur including the cities of Iriga and Naga.

The ESA aims to address the immediate needs of the victims by helping them in their transition to early recovery stage by mitigating their further exposure to vulnerabilities, while the cash for work project is a short term intervention to provide temporary employment to distressed/displaced individuals by participating in or undertaking preparedness, mitigation, relief, rehabilitation or risk reduction projects and activities in their communities to meet their requirement for food and other basic necessities.
