Blast fishing device kills father, hurts 7-yr old son

Arguelles LEGAZPI CITY --- A fisherman died and his seven-year-old son was hurt when an improvised explosive locally known as “bigas-bigas” accidentally exploded on Friday (Aug. 17) night along the shore of Barangay Mansangat, in Garchitorena, Camarines Sur, a police report said on Saturday. The explosion killed Sonny Castor, married a fisherman and a resident of the said barangay, according to Chief Inspector Maria Luisa Calubaquib, PNP Bicol spokesperson. The victim’s son, Jerome, was injured and rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The victims at around 1:00 p.m. Friday were walking along the shores preparing to set sail their banca for fishing when the explosive device they were bringing along suddenly exploded, the report said. “Bigas-bigas” is an illegal fishing practice that uses improvised explosive in catching fish.
