IT IS still seven months away from next year’s mid-term elections but it would seem that it could be a bloody political exercise if the assassination attempt on the lives of the Concepcions who are political figures of La Union could be taken as a gauge. As of now the Commission on Elections has tagged La Union as a political hot spot among other places, like Masbate in Bicol. Experience has taught us that the political rivalries in the local election are often times intense, hence, the use of violence has been inevitable. This is where the mettle of the Philippine National Police will be put to test. We are still lucky that in Camarines Sur and the cities of Naga and Iriga elections are relatively peaceful.
The long arms of the law has finally caught up with former First Lady Imelda R. Marcos who was convicted by the Sandiganbayan to suffer an imprisonment of a total of 77 years for graft and corruption. Doubts, however, have been raised whether she will be incarcerated due to her advanced age. Some sectors are clamoring for her immediate arrest as a consequence of her conviction. It behooves upon the Department of Justice to determine whether or not she is a flight-risk. But even then, the decision of the Sandiganbayan is still subject to a motion for reconsideration and, therefore, has not yet become final. Her failure however, to appear during the promulgation of the decision of conviction has resulted to the cancellation of her bail bond, hence, the court is justified in ordering her arrest.
Since the start of “ber” months, the air has been filled with Christmas songs. No wonder even our department stores are now full with Christmas decors at this stage. So let’s enjoy the season even in the face of high prices of goods and commodities which are barely within the reach of the poor segment of our society.
