Primarily set to support WASH in Schools (WinS) Program by the Department of Education (DepEd), the Metropolitan Naga Water District (MNWD) in partnership with the Rotary Club of Naga piloted the Water Conservation and WASH Caravan 2019 with its kick-off held at Villa Grande Homes Elementary School on July 22 and a culminating activity on September 10 at the Jose Rizal Elementary School, Naga City Subdivision, Triangulo, Naga City.
Already on its 3rd year, MNWD has reached more than 40 elementary and secondary schools within its service coverage area reinforcing water conservation, watershed preservation and improved sanitation and hygiene practices.
The caravan was designed to support the schools in the effective implementation of Water Conservation and WASH in line with DepEd Order No. 10 “Policy and Guidelines on the Comprehensive Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene in Schools (WinS) Program” in recognition of the importance of WASH in schools to achieve the learning outcomes for children.
This year, the caravan has visited a total of 19 schools in Naga City and 4 adjoining municipalities such as Camaligan, Canaman, Gainza, and Magarao with a combined participation of more than 2,500 students and teachers.
Meanwhile, the Rotary Club of Naga over the years focalized its interventions on school hygiene programs, targeting children in both urban and rural areas. This is also part of their 6 areas of focus which includes the provision of sustainable access to water and sanitation. In 2018, the Rotary Club of Naga in collaboration with the District 3820, RC Lucena Circle and RC Naga East spearheaded “Clean Water Everyday, The Great Rotary Way” at Our Lady of Lourdes Infirmary, Carolina, Naga City.
The shared vision of the MNWD and Rotary Club of Naga is really determined in ensuring the quality of life for all Bicolanos, and the schools have been very instrumental in realizing said goal and bring transformation to the communities we serve. (Auria S. Gonzales)
