Grit and Determination

As we write this column, most if not all of us are looking forward to the “new normal” way of life as the General Covid 2 Quarantine is finally lifted. Even then it is still our hope that we maintain the usual protocol to prevent the resurgence of the virus which has affected not only our nation but other countries as well in Asia Pacific, Europe and the United States. As I have said before all is well that ends well.

From recent reports by both print and broadcast media, it would seem that the administration of Mayor Nelson Legacion has been put to tests on many occasions. The city administration has been receiving brick brats on several concerns such as the strict implementation of border control and other similar policies intended to preserve the public health and safety of every Nagueño. The stance of the local administration is not to mind this criticism and continue with its mandated work. In this regard, this writer supports the stand of the mayor and his policy enforcers. I had been in public office myself as municipal councilor of Pasacao, member of the Sangguniang Palalawigan and finally as member of the Batasang Bayan (National Assembly) in the ‘80s and I know how it feels to be in the public eye. It is however, always as source of comfort to feel that one has done his best in the service of his country and people. Not all is given that opportunity. As our foremost national hero Jose P. Rizal has said and I quote: “We need criticism to keep us awake. It makes us see our weaknesses so that we may correct them.” Mayor Legacion, through the many challenges he has had to face, has proven his mettle as a local executive, and I must say he has done a great job and his grit and determination to carry out his mandate is worthy of commendation.

TRIVIA:

Through this column, I wish to express in my own behalf and that of my spouse Minda our most sincere and heartfelt condolence to the spouse and the rest of the family of the late Dr. Belindo Tordilla who passed away the other day. Dr. Tordilla who is known to his batch mates at AdeNU high school batch ‘54 as “Endoy” was a graduate of medicine from UST who opted to serve as Municipal Health Officer instead of making it high abroad to be able to serve the poor, the lowly and the destitute. His remains now lies at the St. Peter Funeral Parlor and will be transferred to Calabanga, his native town on Friday.
