By Paulo DS. Papa

The truck driver who accidentally hit a couple aboard a motorcycle on Aug. 18 along M.T. Villanueva Avenue in Liboton, Naga City, which resulted to the death of the motorcycle back rider is begging his employer to provide him legal assistance as he faced a murder charge.

Ricky Beraña, 49, company driver of Den's Rice Mill and a resident of San Jose, Libon town in Albay, hit Nerwin Magno, 26, of Bagumbayan Sur, Naga City and Alyssa Cabrera, 24, of Pacol, Naga City, resulting to the instant death of the latter.

Magno, who was scheduled to propose marriage to Cabrera last Aug. 21 suffered leg injury due to the accident.

Beraña, who is presently detained in the Naga City Police Station 3, told Bicol Mail that the truck he was driving lost its break that led to the accident. He said the victims’ motorcycle overtook him while he was tailing another truck heading towards Magsaysay Avenue.

He admitted that his attention was focused on the truck infront of him when the accident happened.

Lt. Beverly Calajete, Police Station 3 chief, said that the driver was under influence of alcohol at the time of the accident based on the test conducted after his arrest.

She said that the driver noticed too late the presence of the motorcycle driven by Magno, a businessman and his back rider, Cabrera, a GMA Bicol employee.

She said that the family of Cabrera filed a murder case against the driver.
