Public warned against impostor using Bishop Baylon’s name

Msgr Bernard Pantin of CBCP warned the public particularly the priests about an impostor using the name of Bp. Joel Baylon to con people. Two of the modus operandi the impostor is using is asking priests to hire a caterer for a banquet as he will be coming to officiate a wedding of a niece or to ask for a load.

Several calls have already been received by Bp. Baylon from all over the country asking him him about this. Some have already been conned before realizing it was fake. Today a priest from Tandag and Abp. Jumoad also received such texts/calls. Different cp numbers are being used.

Last week Fr. Louie Occiano also received a call coming from the impostor using the same modus. The caller later sent SMS to Fr Occiano.

Scammers send fake text messages to trick you into giving them your personal information – things like your password, account number, or Social Security number. If they get that information, they could gain access to your email, bank, or other accounts. Or they could sell your information to other scammers.

The scammers use a variety of ever-changing stories to try to rope you in. They may be using names of personalities, charitable institutions or religious to ask for donations. They oftentimes inform you that you won raffle or promo of big companies.

If you get a text message that you weren’t expecting and it asks you to give some personal information, don’t click on any links. Legitimate companies won’t ask for information about your account by text. Ignore the call or better report to the authorities.
