LEGAZPI CITY --- Two New People’s Army (NPA) rebels operating in Sorsogon province have voluntarily surrendered to authorities, the Police Regional Office in Bicol (PRO5) reported on Monday.

In an interview, PRO5 spokesperson Lt. Col. Malu Calubaquib said "Rose" and "Lanie" separately surrendered to joint personnel of the PRO5 and the Philippine Army in Barangay Liang, Irosin town and in Bulan on Sunday afternoon.

"One was identified as alias 'Rose', a medical officer under Komite Larangan Gerilya 1. She turned over to authorities one M16 rifle with defaced serial number, one long magazine loaded with 30 pieces of 5.56mm ammunition and one caliber .38 revolver," Calubaquib said.

On the other hand, alias “Lanie", who belonged to the same rebel group, turned over a .45-caliber pistol loaded with six live ammunition and one hand grenade.

"Both will be enrolled with the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP) of the government in coordination with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG)," Calubaquib added.

She said the surrenderers will be remunerated for their firearms and shall receive livelihood assistance and training as they begin a new chapter in their lives.

PRO5 affirms its readiness to help reintegrate and reconcile rebel returnees to the community.

Brig. Gen. Westrimundo Obinque, PRO5 regional director, thanked the two for finally leaving the armed struggle and choosing the path to peace. (PNA)
