Bicolano heads ‘Spiderman’ visual effects team

By Sierra Rovelo/Kicker Daily News HOLLYWOOD, USA --- Proudly Filipino! A Bicolano named Ryan Rubi headed the team responsible for the awesome visual effects in “Spiderman: Homecoming”, which is presently showing in cinemas nationwide. As lead technical animator, the Camarines Sur [Naga City] native Rubi conceptualized the creation of Peter Parker’s “web wings”, along with other technologies in the latest Spiderman suit. Ryan told GMA News TV program “State of the Nation with Jessica Soho” on Monday: “‘Yung role ko dito sa ‘Spiderman’ ay mas malaki kaysa dati. So mas challenging talaga siya.” Rubi admitted that it wasn’t easy holding a high-ranking position in an animation team. He said: “Hindi madaling mag-manage ng team, eh. Lalo na kung napakadami, tapos pati yung mga supervisor, ‘yung mga meetings, clients, lahat ‘yun na-tackle ko na.” Rubi said he plans to take his success in the visual effects field back to the Philippines by starting his own company. He said that one day, he might meet someone who is willing to co-create a business to continue and improve the visual effects industry in the country. He believes that the “animation visual effects industry” was making a comeback and that Filipinos had great potential. He dreams that the Philippines can reach into the global market of visual effects. According to GMA News, Ryan Rubi finished a digital animation course at the Ateneo de Naga University before he spent seven years in Singapore working for “Lucasfilm.” He scored the top technical animation job at the award-winning international visual effects group “Method Studios” in Vancouver. The group’s biggest clients is “Marvel Studios”. Moreover, Rubi has been in the credits of more than 20 Box Office hits, such as: • Transformers: Age of Extinction • Beauty and the Beast • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows • Jurassic World • Star Wars: The Force Awakens • Gravity • Warcraft: The Beginning • Noah • Captain America: The Winter Soldier and of course, Spider-Man: Homecoming.
