NAGA CITY --- Malacanang has declared August 18, Friday, a special non-working day in this city. By authority of the President, Executive Secretary Salvador C. Medialdea issued Proclamation No. 274 in commemoration of the death anniversary of former DILG Secretary Jesse M. Robredo, who also served as Naga’s mayor for 19 years. The proclamation cited the late secretary as “a champion of good governance [and] was instrumental in the implementation of far-reaching reforms in local governance.” Considered as one of the local heroes of Naga City, as the same proclamation stated, Secretary Robredo passed away in a tragic plane accident on 18 August 2012. It added: “his many virtues as a public servant have permanently earned him the gratitude of the City he led, and the Republic he served.” A Ramon Magsaysay awardee for exemplary government service -- the first Filipino mayor to be conferred the prestigious distinction, which is Asia’s version of the Nobel Peace Prize – Robredo served as Mayor of Naga from 1988 to 1998 and from 2001 to 2010.
