By Connie Destura LEGAZPI CITY --- The Department of Education (DEPED) regional office for Bicol received new sets of learning tools from Fuel for School Program (FYS ) of Caltex Philippines to help improve the learning environment of students in some highest-need public schools here in Bicol. DepEd Regional Director Ramon Fiel Abcede in an interview Monday said he personally expressed his appreciation to Caltex, Chevron Philippines for the unending support of the company to DepEd’s programs and projects. “The project will not just benefit our students; we also have 1,667 teachers as beneficiaries to this FYS, we can now expect from them the implementation of the 21st century learning methods and teaching strategy--- I am also happy that Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs are the priorities of these FYS project since the rapid change in the learning methods for Science and Technology has been one of DepEd biggest challenge” Abcede said. The FYS program is a fuel-to-donate program of Caltex, Chevron Philippines in which the company commits P1.00 of their earnings to public schools for every one liter purchase of Caltex with Techron from any of the 22 Caltex stations in Bicol. The program is unique because the students and school staff participated in the campaign to fuel-up the program thru social media, jingles, cheers and distribution of FYS flyers. Caltex generated about 3 million pesos in the entire duration of the campaign and then used the accumulated fund to purchase materials needed to support the programs of DepEd. Chevron Philippines Inc. Policy, Government and Public Affairs Manager Atty. Raissa Bautista commended all the beneficiaries of the program for their active participation in raising public awareness about the project. Bautista praised the students for coming up with several unique campaigns in promoting the FYS which is a contributing factor for the success of the program. Aside from the donations to the selected public schools in Bicol, Chevron also awarded recognition to the top 3 schools with most number of likes in their FYS social media campaign.
