PH bags silver, bronze in naga tourney: Asean youth table tennis championship ends

By Armie Gunay NAGA CITY --- The Philippine team won silver and bronze medals in the recently concluded 24th Southeast Asian Junior & Cadet Table Tennis Championships held last July 4-8 at Robinsons Place Naga Activity Center here. Some 127 young table tennis players from from seven other member-countries of the Association of the Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN)— Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand. Vietnam, and the Philippines— vied for the top honors in the 5-day sports competition. Khieth Rynne Cruz and Althea Jade Gudes bagged a silver medal in the Cadet Girls Doubles while Jannah Maryam Romero took home a bronze medal in the Junior Girls Singles Event. Singapore came out as the over-all champion, garnering a total of 8 gold medals, two silver, and 9 bronze medals. Malaysia followed suit with 2 golds, 2 silvers, and one bronze. Thailand came third with 5 silver medals, and 4 bronze medals. The Philippines had one silver medal and a bronze. Vietnam followed with 4 bronze medals while Vietnam also got 4 bronzes and Indonesia had one bronze medal. Most of the players of the champion Singapore team will represent the Southeast Asia in the Asian Cadet and Junior Table Tennis Championship to be held in Myanmar later this year. Ting Ledesma, the president of the Philippine Table Tennis Federation, Inc., said they would continue to support the conduct of the Metro Naga Super League Grand Prix Table Tennis Tournament held here annually, as well as other free table tennis sports clinics, to promote further the sports.
