Uneasy is the Head that Wears the Crown

UNEASY is the head that wears the crown, so they say, and this must be how it feels with House Speaker-to-be, Congressman Alan Peter Cayetano of Taguig, Rizal, who, despite the term-sharing agreement of the House Speakership with Marinduque Congressman Lord Alan Velasco rumors still persist that comes July 22 when both the Senate and the House of Representatives assemble to hear the President’s State of the Nation, there might actually be an election for the House Speakership and dismantle the much-ballyhooed term-sharing agreement. We have it from good sources that some congressmen who are allied with the administration are discontented over the assignment of some important House committees. Whether these committee assignments will be respected upon the assumption of Congressman Velasco after Cayetano’s fifteen months term as Speaker is another thorn in the neck as it is perceived by some congressmen that Congressman Velasco has his own men who are angling to grab their respective committee chairmanships. Be that as it may, it would seem that those who opposed the term sharing agreement are right in their contention that the same is undemocratic as it negates the Constitutional mandate on the election of House Speakership.

TRIVIA:

We are honored to have a Bicolano priest in the person of Rev. Fr. Gerard Francisco Timoner III chosen as Master of the Order of Preachers, more popularly known as the Dominican Order. He is the first Asian to be elected in this position. He is the son of our AdeNU high school batch ‘54 batchmate Francisco “Frank” Timoner, of Daet, Camarines Norte. The last time my spouse Minda and I had a chance to relate with Fr. Gerard was months back during the wake of his late father at their ancestral home in Daet. Thru this column, therefore, our most sincere congratulations to Fr. Gerard.
