The Long Queue

THE opening today of the new dumpsite at Barangay San Isidro is a welcome development for the City of Naga. This means that the city administration under incumbent Mayor Nelson Legacion will abandon the use of the Balatas dumpsite which the city government has been using for decades. This dumpsite at Balatas has been the source of complaints from many residents of Naga especially those from Magsaysay Avenue, Balatas, San Felipe, Concepcion Peguena and Concepcion Grande as it emits foul odor especially during rainy season. It is our hope that our residents will heed the call of the city administration to always segregate their non-biodegradable and biodegradable trash. Reportedly, the new dumpsite is expected to be of use to the city for the next twenty years or so.

Yesterday morning, this writer has observed with sadness the long queue of senior citizens at the SM mall vying for a free movie ticket. Traditionally, the city government of Naga has allotted two days a week (Mondays and Tuesdays) for free movie for its senior citizens. Yesterday’s queue was extra-ordinarily long because Monday was declared a national holiday; hence, the slated free movie was automatically cancelled as the city hall employees in charge of identifying senior citizens’ cards in exchange for free movie ticket did not report for work. But the senior citizens queue every Monday and Tuesday of the week is a sight to behold. I am wondering if the city administration under the leadership of Mayor Legacion could just make an arrangement with the management of SM mall to just allow any senior citizen-resident of Naga enter the movie by simply showing their senior citizens identification card. In this way, long queues will be minimized if not totally abolished.

The incident which led to the hand-cuffing of a transgender by a security guard who denied the former to use of the Ladies Room at the Farmers Market in Quezon City is quite unfortunate. The incident which went viral on the Internet occurred when the transgender argued with the security guard to allow him to use the Ladies room. The transgender phenomenon is now accepted by our society; hence, I see no reason why they should be discriminated against. Be that as it may, it is our hope that Congress would fast track the passage of the SOGIE bill to have a clear cut definition of the rights of transgerders.
