MNWD to build P127.5 M water treatment plant

NAGA CITY --- The Metropolitan Naga Water District (MNWD) has confirmed its plan to construct the Bicol River Surface Water Treatment Plant next year 2020 to augment its present sources to ensure adequate potable water supply to over 56,000 households here and the four towns of Gainza, Camaligan, Canaman, and Magarao, all located in the 3rd district of Camarines Sur.

Engr. Virgilio Luansing, MNWD general manager said the water treatment project funded by a loan from the Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) is scheduled for bidding in the first quarter of next year. It can process and produce some 5 million cubic meters of clean drinking water from the Bicol River once the plant is completed and becomes operational. The plant will be built on a 3,000 square meter lot in Sitio Pagdaicon, Barangay Mabulo, Naga City.

The water firm executive bared that the continuing decline in MNWD’s traditional water sources such as the Romangrap and Anayan Springs in Pili, Camarines Sur and the Kalinisan and Panicuason Springs in Naga Ciy poses a threat to the water district ability to provide enough water to its consumers.

He said that in 2001, the combined water production of the 4 springs totaled 8 million cubic meters (cm), however this year 2019, the output fell down to just 6 million cm.

Luansing also bared that the MNWD is putting up seven new pumping stations next year to boost its water production aside from the construction of the water treatment plant. At present, the MNWD has 28 existing pumping stations and four springs from where it gets water to supply the needs of consumers in its area of coverage.

Drilling for additional pumping stations will totally stop by 2027, he said.
