Bicol Access cathlab marks 1st successful procedure

The bicol access Cathlab in Naga City where the first-ever coronary angiogram, angioplasty and pacemaker implantation have successfully been done.

The Bicol AccessHealth Centrum Heart Institute - Catheterization Laboratory has successfully performed its first coronary angiogram, angioplasty, and pacemaker implantation at its newly-opened facility on Friday, Jan. 24, 2020.

It is the first time that such procedures have been done in Naga City and the first to be done by a private healthcare facility. In the past, cardiac patients needed to be brought to the Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital (BRTTH). The AccessHealth Heart Institute-Cathlab now brings high quality cardiac care much closer to home.

The AccessHealth Heart Institute’s new Cathlab is the first of its kind in the Bicol region and can provide services to other parts of Southern Luzon as well. It houses state-of-the-art facilities, among which include the Philips IGT-DS ALLURA XPER FD10 R8.1, with a ceiling-mounted C-arm stand and digital X-ray system for cardiovascular diagnostic and interventional procedures.

The Cathlab is a life-saving facility for patients having a heart attack. Other patients who may qualify for a Cathlab procedure may include those who are on maximum heart disease medication, but still have chest pains and are easily fatigued.

The AccessHealth Heart Institute’s new Cathlab is designed to improve the workflow of the hospital’s interventional cardiologists, which leads to shorter procedure times, fewer complications for patients, and good clinical outcomes. The new Cathlab produces clear, crisp images using lower doses of radiation, which means both patients and medical staff deal with less radiation exposure.

Dr. Anderson L. Lazo, head of the AccessHealth Heart Institute said that “The AccessHealth Heart Institute’s new Cathlab provides top-rate imaging of the coronary arteries. Through the Cathlab, we will be able to diagnose the presence or absence of coronary artery disease and establish the significance of these diseases. It can help us determine if a patient will require major coronary treatment, or simply not need one” The AccessHealth Heart Institute is headed by Dr. Anderson L. Lazo- Interventional-Cardiology. The other members of the Heart Institute are: Dr. Russel P. Reyes-(Interventional-Cardiology); Dr. Karl Joseph C. Chavez (Interventional-Cardiology); Dr. Elmo S. Bombase Jr. (Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery); and Dr. Sarah Celeste DC. Angeles (Cardiovascular Anaesthesiology).
