GMRC a welcome move in Congress - Bp Rex Alarcon of Daet

Bishop Rex Andrew Alarcon of Daet said that “good manners and right conduct” is actually at the “core” of education.

“The best schools in the world begin with the education of the young in manners, values, virtues,” said Alarcon, who chairs the bishops’ Commission on Youth.

“Institutionalizing GMRC in education will hopefully reinforce the message that real progress can only be achieved by forming the human person first and foremost,” he said.

The prelate also said that the move in Congress couldn’t have come at a better time when people are becoming more reliant on technology.

“At the time of digital transformation and artificial intelligence, all the more we realize the need to focus on being more human,” said Alarcon.

The Senate on Monday approved a bill that seeks to establish GMRC classes as mandatory and core subjects under the K to 12 program.

Last month, the House of Representatives also passed the same measure — one that would also require the subject for kindergarten students.

GMRC was removed as a regular subject from the K to 12 curriculum in 2013 and was integrated with other subjects like Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao and Araling Panlipunan. (CBCPNews)
