LEGAZPI CITY --- State seismologists reported on Saturday that 26 small earthquakes were detected at Mayon Volcano, indicating a potential steam-driven eruption.

In its September 6 Mayon bulletin, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) noted an increase in seismic activity and ongoing swelling in the northeastern area of the volcano since October 2024, as well as in the southern and southwestern areas since March 2025.

These signs may suggest that magma is moving closer to the surface, which increases the likelihood of sudden steam-driven eruptions occurring at the volcano’s summit, according to the seismological bureau.

Phivolcs warns that Mayon is currently at Alert Level 1, indicating “it is at an abnormal condition.”

While this does not mean an eruption is expected soon, people are strongly advised to stay out of the 6-kilometer danger zone surrounding the volcano, the agency said.

This area is unsafe due to risks such as falling rocks, landslides, and potential explosive eruptions that could release hot gas and ash, it added.

Phivolcs said streams and river channels near the volcano, particularly those known to experience dangerous mudflows during heavy rain, should also be avoided, especially during severe weather.

Air travel near the volcano’s summit is discouraged as ash and debris from unexpected eruptions can pose risks to aircraft, the seismological bureau added. (PIA Bicol/Masbate)
