A New Poetry Prize Honors Poet and Visual Artist Manlagñit

THE Arts, Books, Cinema, an independent bookshop in Naga City and the Department of Education Region V invite all junior and senior high school students to join in the 2021 PREMYO GUALBERTO C. MANLAGÑIT: Poetry Prize for Young Bikolnon Poets.

This new poetry prize for young Bikolnon poets is named after lawyer and public servant, writer/translator, lyricist, publisher and visual artist, Gualberto Cea Manlagñit, this writer’s prize honors the memory of a man who has substantially contributed in the growth of Bikol arts and culture. It is hoped that through his works, we may be able to inspire young Bikolnons to follow their artistic and creative pursuits.

The contest is open to all Junior and Senior High School students (both public and private) in the Bikol region.

All Bikol languages will be accepted in this writing contest including Minasbate, Tigaonon, Rinconada, Boinen, Katanduanon, among others.

The submitted poem is to be based on the painting Sa Baybay Sisiran, a visual work of art by Manlagñit which appears in the Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/PGMBikolnon. It may follow a traditional or the free verse form. Submission will be done on-line.

a. Computerized (doc or docx format)

b. Use font Arial 12pt., single spaced, A4 size bond paper.

c. Entry may use a pen name and must not contain the real name of the poet

d. Send a pdf bio-note about the poet and 2x2 recent photograph

e. A student can only submit one entry. The work must be original, unpublished, and not a translation of any other work. Plagiarism will not be tolerated at all costs.

f. Send your entry to savagemindbookshop@gmail.com with the subject entry: 2021 PREMYO MANLAGNIT/Family Name. Submit your entry starting June 1, 2021 until 12 midnight Philippine Time of June 28, 2021.

The awarding will take place on 2 August 2021 in time for the Buwan ng Wika celebration which will be spearheaded by the Department of Education, RegionV with Dr. Olay Laguda as one of the convenors.

10 Finalists will be selected and from these finalists three winners will be chosen.

Winners will get the following prizes:

First Prize P 10, 000.00 + PREMYO GUALBERTO C. MANLAGÑIT GOLD MEDALLION and a Plaque of Appreciation

The school of the winning student will also receive the book packages worth P 4, 000.00 including the Gualberto Manlagñit: Mga Piling Obra published by Ateneo de Naga University Press plus a plaque of appreciation.

Second Prize P 7, 000.00 + Plaque of Appreciation

The school of the winning student will also receive the book packages worth P 2, 500.00 including the Gualberto Manlagñit: Mga Piling Obra published by Ateneo de Naga University Press.

Third Prize P 5, 000.00 + Plaque of Appreciation

The school of the winning student will also receive the book packages worth P 1, 500.00 including the Gualberto Manlagñit: Mga Piling Obra published by Ateneo de Naga University Press.

The Seven Finalists will receive P 1, 000.00, a certificate of recognition and a copy of Gualberto Manlagñit: Mga Piling Obra published by Ateneo de Naga University Press. The respective schools of these finalists will receive a book package worth P 1, 000.00 and a certificate of recognition.
