LEGAZPI CITY --- A police officer who demonstrated extraordinary valor while serving a search warrant was recognized with a special promotion during the flag-raising ceremony at Camp Simeon Ola here Monday.
Police Regional Office-Bicol (PRO-5) Director Brig. Gen. Andre Dizon presided over the oath-taking and pinning of ranks on Cpl. Alexander Nopia in recognition of his courage, service, and bravery that ensured the safety of his team while combating an organized crime group in 2017.
Nopia, who has since recovered but is paralyzed on the right side of his body, was promoted to staff sergeant.
"This well-deserved promotion is a gesture of the Philippine National Police’s deep gratitude and respect for Nopia’s extraordinary service and sacrifice. His story serves as an inspiration to his fellow Kasurog cops and a reminder of the immense risks our law enforcement personnel face daily to ensure public safety," Dizon said.
"This ceremony served as a meaningful occasion to honor the dedication and valor of PRO-5 personnel, exemplifying their unwavering commitment to serving and protecting the community, often at great personal cost," he added.
On Dec. 29, 2017 in Barangay Neighborhood, Bato, Camarines Sur, Nopia went to the house of Jorge Parañal Jr., a member of the notorious Concepcion Criminal Gang, and his live-in partner to implement a search warrant.
Despite knowing the suspects were heavily armed, Nopia entered the house through the back door, where the suspects immediately opened fire.
Nopia sustained severe injuries from multiple gunshots, including to the head.
The partners were arrested while Nopia’s team recovered four cartridges of 9mm caliber, 22 cartridges of a 5.56 caliber, a handgun, a magazine loaded with 11 live rounds, a hand grenade, and an M203 grenade. (PNA)
