A Statement Against the Elite in Politics

Something caught my attention while listening to Joe Osabal in his regular morning program “Asintado”. It was the mention of a vendor who articulated his intent to file his candidacy for local elections-or who in fact had already done so. This was worth noting for me because it carried a very strong political statement. And it was, to me, directed at the politics of this country that has often been dominated only by the elite and by personalities and families of power and influence.

As the election season is on again, we see the same phenomenon happening before our eyes- politicians making politics a family enterprise and enticing sons, daughters and other family members to aspire for elective positions in their localities. When a simple vendor articulates his wish to “join the fray’, so to speak, it makes one raise up the slimmest possibility that in this kind of political culture, there might be a chance that one who is unknown and totally unconnected politically, socially and financially, but who has the right capabilities of leadership might ever be elected at all. It is a counterculture, the kind in fact that we need for change to genuinely happen, but is it at all possible?

I would like to think it is, but we have a long way to go in order to get there. The power of the people is at the center of the electoral process. We have to painstakingly educate the grassroots and the youth to use this power well. As is often said, it is people power, not people in power, that can make change happen. People power is in the ordinary citizen, like our aspiring vendor.

QUOTATION OF THE WEEK:

“Bad things do happen in the world, like war, natural disasters, disease. But out of those situations always arise stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things.”

Daryn kagan

FOR OUR WORD OF LIFE:

“When they saw the courage of peter and john and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with jesus.”

Acts 4:13 (niv)
