AI paves growth in accounting - PICPA

By CONNIE CALIPAY

The Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) expressed optimism recently, emphasizing that artificial intelligence (AI) is seen as a valuable opportunity to enhance and elevate the accounting profession, rather than posing a threat.

Addressing the role of AI in accounting during a press conference at the Villa Isabel Hotel in Sorsogon City, PICPA National President Randy Blanza outlined the organization’s proactive approach to stay ahead of technological shifts.

He underscored their commitment to cultivating skills that surpass those of computers, affirming, “We are more than willing to take that opportunity to outgrow the challenges.”

Blanza highlighted the ongoing efforts within the profession to address topics such as sustainability and quality assurance, ensuring that certified public accountants (CPAs) in the country remain at the forefront of technological advancements.

Speaking about the relevance of CPAs, he stated, “With (regards to) AI, sustainability and quality assurance are some of the topics that we are always discussing and training ourselves para makasabay po kami sa mga (so that we can keep up with) technology advancement.”

The PICPA National Convention, themed “Redefining the Roles of Certified Public Accountants,” kicked off on November 22, 2023, at the Villa Isabel Hotel in Sorsogon City.

Attended by over 3,500 certified public accountants, the four-day event features various technical sessions and training sessions aimed at ensuring the continued relevance of CPAs in nation-building.

PICPA, composed of four sectors—government relations, commerce and industries, academe, and public accountants—selected Sorsogon as this year’s convention venue to showcase the province’s unique beauty and potential.

The convention serves as a platform for professionals to stay informed and equipped in an era where AI is increasingly integrated into the fabric of the accounting landscape.
