LEGAZPI CITY --- The provincial government of Albay has allocated a PHP5-million fund for the maintenance of the Albay Provincial Sports Complex, located at Bicol University (BU) in this city.

In an interview, lawyer Sheina Marie Onrubia-Dela Cruz, Albay 1st District Board Member and Chair of the Committee on Laws, Rules, and Oversight, said the yearly funding will be sourced from the provincial government’s general fund.

“The funding will be used for the repair and maintenance of the sports complex. A memorandum of agreement (MOA) between the Provincial Government of Albay (PGA) and Bicol University (BU) will establish a management committee to oversee the operation of the complex. Both BU and PGA will have a say in decisions regarding purchases and maintenance of the sports facility,” Dela Cruz said.

As the proponent of the funding allocation, Dela Cruz aims to ensure that the facility is well-utilized and accessible to the residents of Albay.

“Our goal is to promote sports development in the province. We want to enhance the capacity, potential, and skills of our sports enthusiasts. With the right support from the government, we could witness future Olympians and medalists emerge,” she added.

Dela Cruz further underscored their concrete actions to uplift the morale of Albayano athletes.

“Every Albayano can utilize this facility; they just need to submit a request to Bicol University. This funding is a testament to the provincial government’s commitment to serving the people,” she said.

In a separate interview on Tuesday, Albay provincial engineer Dante Baclao said this funding will ensure necessary repairs and maintenance for the facilities.

“Having annual funding is advantageous as it addresses essential needs for repairs and maintenance. This allows for readily available funds for the upkeep of the sports complex,” he said.

Baclao added that personnel from the province will collaborate with Bicol University staff to assess the condition of the swimming pool, oval track, and grandstand. (PNA)
