Albay city flags Facebook post announcing class postponement due to earthquake

LEGASPI CITY --- Some residents of Tabaco City in Albay fell victim to online disinformation after an announcement claiming that the start of classes, scheduled for Monday, June 8, had been postponed due to a strong earthquake that struck the city the previous Friday made the rounds on social media on Sunday.

In an advisory, the Tabaco City Public Information Office (TCPIO) labeled as “fake” a Facebook post that stated that the first day of classes on June 8, 2026, was deferred in response to the effects of the magnitude 5.3 earthquake.

“Based on verification conducted by the Schools Division Office Tabaco and confirmed by the schools division superintendent, regular classes at all levels in Tabaco City will resume tomorrow (Monday, June 8, 2026) despite the recent earthquake,” the TCPIO said on Sunday.

Tabaco Mayor Rey Bragais encouraged his constituents to follow the official social media accounts of Tabaco city government, Department of Education, and other agencies concerned, for announcements about classes and other important information.

“All students, parents, teachers, and schools are advised not to believe and not to share unverified information circulating on social media regarding the alleged suspension of classes,” he said. (PIA Bicol)
