LEGAZPI CITY, Albay --- Public and private organizations in Albay have initiated a bayanihan drive to help communities in Masbate after Typhoon Opong (Bualoi) left the island province in ruins, leaving streets strewn with toppled electric and telecommunication poles, trees, and debris blown off from buildings.

The initiative includes relief operations, financial aid, and calls for donations from various sectors.

The provincial government of Albay has extended ₱1 million in financial assistance to the provincial government of Masbate to help jumpstart their relief and recovery efforts.

“While this contribution represents our province’s commitment to stand with Masbate, the scale of this disaster demands a far greater response than any single province can provide,” Rosal said.

In addition to the financial aid, a contingent composed of personnel from the provincial government, Philippine National Police, and Bureau of Fire Protection arrived in Masbate on Wednesday.

They were to oversee the distribution of clean water for drinking and domestic use through two water and sanitation trucks and two additional trucks.

The city government of Legazpi has also demonstrated solidarity by approving a ₱500,000 donation to Masbate’s local government to help families displaced by the typhoon.

The approved resolution reflects the city government’s deep compassion and solidarity with fellow Bicolanos, demonstrating that it’s always ready to extend a helping hand to neighbors in need.

The Department of Education’s Schools Division Office of Albay has launched the “ALBAYanihan for MASBATE” campaign to support affected learners and teachers.

The office appeals for donations, regardless of amount, emphasizing that every contribution can have a significant impact.

While cash donations are preferred due to distance and hauling concerns, rice, canned goods, school supplies, and tents for temporary classrooms are also accepted.

Donations can be sent to Maria Eloisa Arellano, senior education program specialist, at mobile numbers 0968-012-8518 or 0968-530-9496.

Meanwhile, the BU LAWOD, an organization of Masbateños in Bicol University (BU), has reported the distribution of relief goods gathered from a recent donation drive to affected students and residents in towns hardest hit by Opong.

Donors can find more details and donation information on their official BU LAWOD Facebook page.
