ALBAY GUBERNATORIAL RACE: Lagman backtracks to save Albay

SUSPENDED Governor Edcel Grecon “Grex” Lagman announced his withdrawal from the 2025 gubernatorial race during a press conference held on Thursday at The Oriental Hotel in Legazpi City.
The decision, described as a “supreme sacrifice,” was made to strengthen the candidacy of ousted Governor Noel Rosal and to “save Albay from greed and manipulation.”
“By withdrawing, I am boosting the chances of Governor Noel Rosal winning. Together, we affirm the principle that only the people—not politics—should decide who governs our province,” Lagman declared.
The announcement stunned Lagman’s supporters, who had enthusiastically backed his campaign. Flanked by his sister, Tabaco City Mayor Krisel Lagman, and other allies, he explained that his decision was rooted in a desire to prioritize the province’s welfare over personal ambition.
Lagman emphasized that his withdrawal was not a concession but a strategic move for the greater good of Albay. “My goal is not just to win but for Albay to win. By stepping aside, I ensure our shared dream for the province will be realized through meaningful alliances with leaders who genuinely care for our people,” he said.
Rosal, who was ousted from his post along with his wife, former Mayor Geraldine Rosal, lauded Lagman’s selfless decision. “For 34 years, I’ve never witnessed such a noble act. Gov. Grex’s supreme sacrifice is an inspiration for all of us,” Rosal said.
The alliance between the Lagmans and Rosals was brokered by Ligao City Mayor Fernando Gonzalez, who urged the two camps to unite against common adversaries. Mayor Krisel Lagman revealed that the partnership was formed swiftly, with both sides realizing the need to consolidate their efforts for the benefit of Albayanos.
Lagman and Rosal decried the manipulation and greed that led to their removal from office, calling on Albayanos to stand against those who exploit power for personal gain. “We are not blind or deaf. We know what is happening in Albay. Let us save our beautiful province,” Lagman urged.
Rosal echoed this sentiment, describing the alliance as a divine intervention and a reaffirmation of democracy. “This partnership shows there is still hope and justice. We will fight to restore the people’s mandate,” he said.
Lagman’s withdrawal was praised by Albayanos, who viewed the move as a unifying act of statesmanship. His decision comes a week after the Diocese of Legazpi issued an open letter calling on Albay’s leaders to moderate their ambitions and prioritize the province’s welfare.
As the campaign season intensifies, the Lagman-Rosal alliance vows to restore democracy and protect Albay from leaders who prioritize personal interests over the collective good.
