Grass fire hits Balatan village


BALATAN, Camarines Sur --- A grassy area in Sitio Mang-it, Barangay Cabanbanan here was razed by fire Tuesday morning, May 19, authorities said.


Initial reports said the fire broke out at around 9:30 a.m., prompting personnel from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and the Balatan Municipal Police Station (MPS) to immediately respond and conduct fire suppression operations. Authorities were able to place the fire under control and declared “fire out” at about 10:40 a.m. of the same day. Police said responding personnel were immediately dispatched to render necessary assistance during the incident. No casualties or damage to nearby properties were reported as of this writing.



Jobless man arrested in Iriga gun buy-bust


IRIGA CITY --- A 49-year-old jobless man was arrested in a buy-bust operation for alleged violation of Republic Act 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act shortly before midnight Tuesday, May 19, in Barangay San Isidro here.


Authorities identified the suspect only through his alias “Mar,” a resident of Iriga City.


The operation was conducted at around 11:55 p.m. by joint operatives of the CIDG Camarines Sur Provincial Field Unit, Iriga City Police Station, Camarines Sur Maritime Police Station, and the 501st Maneuver Company of the Regional Mobile Force Battalion 5.


Recovered from the possession of the suspect were a caliber .357 Magnum revolver with marking “S & W 357 Magnum,” five live ammunition for the firearm, a genuine P1,000 bill used as marked money wrapped with seven pieces of boodle money, a black holster, and a black sling bag.


Authorities said the operation was properly documented using an Alternative Recording Device (ARD) and witnessed by required persons during the conduct of the operation.


The suspect was informed of his constitutional rights before being brought to the CIDG Camarines Sur PFU office for documentation and proper disposition.


Police added that verification through the CIRAS and e-warrant systems showed that the suspect had no existing criminal record or standing warrant of arrest.



Two injured in highway collision in San Fernando


SAN FERNANDO, Camarines Sur — Two persons were injured after a motorcycle figured in a collision with a utility jeepney along Maharlika Highway in Barangay Buenavista here Tuesday noon, May 19.


Police said the incident happened at around 12:30 p.m. in Zone 3 of the barangay.


Investigation showed that a blue utility jeepney driven by a 52-year-old driver from Pasacao town was traveling southbound toward Naga City when a Honda Click 125 motorcycle driven by a 23-year-old student from Milaor allegedly encroached into the opposite lane.


The motorcycle reportedly slipped, causing its driver and back rider identified only as Christian of Naga City to be thrown onto the path of the oncoming jeepney and subsequently struck by the vehicle.


Both injured victims were rushed to the Bicol Medical Center for medical treatment.


Police said both vehicles sustained damages of still undetermined amount.


Authorities conducted an ocular inspection at the scene, while the involved vehicles were placed under police custody for proper disposition. Verification through the e-warrant system also showed that both drivers had no standing warrants of arrest. Technical inspection of the vehicles was still ongoing.



Unidentified woman found dead off Lagonoy coast


LAGONOY, Camarines Sur — The body of an unidentified woman was recovered Tuesday afternoon, May 19, in the seawaters off Barangay Panicuan here, police said.


The Lagonoy Municipal Police Station (MPS) said it received information regarding the discovery of a cadaver at around 3:15 p.m. in Zone 1 of the barangay.


Investigation disclosed that the victim was found floating along the shoreline waters of the area. Based on accounts from residents, the woman allegedly went swimming at Luksuhon Falls in Barangay Buenavista, Presentacion town, but was reportedly swept away by strong water currents following a sudden rise in water level caused by runoff from upland areas.


Residents immediately sought assistance from authorities and rescue personnel, leading to the retrieval of the body from the water.


As of this writing, authorities have yet to establish the identity of the victim. Police said coordination with concerned agencies is ongoing for proper identification and further investigation. Area inspection, witness interviews, and documentation of the incident were also conducted.
