Cops warn public vs use of ‘boga’ during holiday season

POLICE authorities in Naga City have reminded the public that the use of boga—an improvised cannon commonly used during the holiday season—is strictly prohibited, citing its potential hazards, particularly to children.
The boga, typically made of PVC pipes or several cans attached together with a plastic bottle igniter at the bottom, produces a loud explosive sound when miniature alcohol is ignited. While children and teenagers in some parts of the city use it for leisure, the device has raised safety concerns among vigilant citizens.
PSSG Roberto Aguillon, deputy spokesman of the Naga City Police Office, confirmed in an interview that the use of boga is not permitted, especially by minors. He stressed that the device poses a serious risk of physical harm to users.
Aguillon advised the public to confiscate boga devices when found and to bring them to the nearest barangay hall for proper disposal. He added that barangay officials have the authority to handle and dispose of confiscated units.
In Barangay Pacol, however, Village Councilor Jerry Aspe, head of the Committee on Agriculture, clarified that their council does not confiscate boga when used for agricultural purposes. Farmers in the area commonly use the device to scare away birds that damage crops.
“We cannot confiscate a single unit from farmers, but we will not tolerate its use for leisure, especially by minors,” Aspe said. He assured that the barangay council is prepared to act on reports of boga being used as a toy by children.
The Naga City Police urge the public to remain vigilant and to report the unauthorized use of boga to prevent accidents during the holiday season.
