LEGAZPI CITY --- The Department of Education (DepEd) 5 (Bicol) reminded school heads, teachers, and other school officials that upcoming end-of-school-year activities and rites must be solemn and free from political influences.

In an interview on Friday, Mark Kevin Arroco, DepEd-5 project development officer, said the reminder is meant to ensure that the activities are solely focused on recognizing the hard work, growth, and academic achievements of learners.

"We want to give highlights to the students and their accomplishments and not be used as a venue for a political campaign. Any participation of candidates in the event, like being the guest of honor and speaker, is not allowed," Arroco said.

He said the reminder came after a regional memorandum was issued early this month by DepEd-5 Director Gilbert Sadsad.

"The end of the school year will be on April 14-15 this year. The memorandum covers all the public elementary and secondary schools in the region, but we also encouraged private schools," Arroco added.

In a statement, Sadsad urged school division offices to strictly adhere to DepEd Order 48 series of 2018, which prohibits DepEd personnel from engaging in electioneering and partisan political activities.

Citing provisions from the Constitution and Civil Service Commission regulations, Sadsad added that government officials and employees must remain nonpartisan to uphold the integrity of public service.

He also warned that any complaints regarding electioneering or partisan activities during ceremonies would be promptly addressed by the appropriate governance level of the DepEd.

"These initiatives are part of the agency’s commitment to promoting clean and honest elections," he said. (With reports from Princess Atule and Alyana Amador, OJT/PNA)
