LEGAZPI CITY --- The Department of Health in Bicol (DOH-5) is intensifying its efforts to reduce tobacco and vape consumption in the region while encouraging the public to adopt healthier lifestyles as part of National No Smoking Month.
As part of these efforts, DOH-5 said it is conducting an ongoing integrated training on the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) until Friday. This training aims to equip healthcare workers in the region with the skills necessary to promote healthy living and effectively manage NCDs at the community level.
"DOH-5 remains committed to achieving a 100 percent smoke-free region. Through the National Tobacco Control and Prevention Program, the Department aims to decrease the prevalence of tobacco use by 30 percent in collaboration with inter-agency smoke-free committees and the implementation of regulatory policies concerning tobacco and vape products," the agency said in a statement Tuesday.
DOH-5 said it is also coordinating continuously with local government units (LGUs) to implement “Comprehensive Smoke and Vape Free Ordinances,” which prohibit the use of tobacco products, vapes, and e-cigarettes in public spaces, including schools, healthcare facilities, and workplaces.
The health agency said it has programs in place to ensure accessibility to smoking cessation services at health facilities, assisting more individuals in quitting smoking. People are encouraged to visit their nearest health facilities for free early detection, counseling, and risk assessments, or to contact the DOH Quitline at 1558 for support.
DOH-Bicol emphasized that the public should take a proactive role in safeguarding their health. Quitting tobacco use remains one of the most effective ways to prevent diseases and improve health outcomes, alongside maintaining a balanced diet, engaging in regular exercise, and ensuring adequate rest.
In 2024, the Field Health Services Information System (FHSIS) recorded that 197,030 Bicolanos aged 20 to 59 were identified as tobacco users. There was also a notable prevalence of smoking among individuals aged 60 and above, with a total of 29,864 identified as current smokers in the same year. (PNA)
