DOH disapproves canon use after 4 posted firecracker injuries

By Keren Anne Bernadas

NAGA CITY --- The Department of Health – Center for Health Development (DOH CHD) Bicol on Tuesday discouraged the public on the use of improvised canons as it may bring hazardz. It may also cause burns, lacerations, and worst, amputation of the affected part.

This advisory was released following the four fireworks-related injuries that were recently logged in the region during the holiday season.

According to the bulletin on December 27, the department identified two cases from Camarines Sur, one from Camarines Norte, and one from Albay. All victims were reported to be minors – 7 years old recorded as youngest, and 15 years old, as the eldest.

Of these cases, three were caused by the illegal pyrotechnic device. One of the common examples of these improvised canons, the department cited, is the so-called “boga” or handmade pyrotechnic devices usually made from PVC pipes or bamboo.

In its advisory, the department appealed to all parents to prohibit their children from using harmful firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices to prevent similar incidents during the holiday season.

Instead, the public may use horns, musical instruments, and other nose-making materials to celebrate the holidays without fireworks danger.

Further, hospitals and health facilities, as well as other local government units are advised to prepare for any untoward firecrackers-incidents and to enforce strict protocols on activities that pose physical harm. (PIA5/Camarines Sur)
