EDITORIAL: Earthquake Preparedness

THE other day, our nation was once again reminded of the unpredictable and powerful forces of nature. A magnitude 5.1 earthquake rocked Sultan Kudarat, followed by a moderate tremor in Sarangani, Davao Occidental.
These seismic events, though not causing significant damage, serve as a reminder of the constant threat that natural disasters pose to our safety and well-being.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that the earthquake in Sultan Kudarat had a depth of 546 km, while the tremor in Sarangani occurred at a depth of 160 km.
Both quakes were tectonic in origin, highlighting the complex geological activity beneath the surface of our country.
Though no major damage was expected, Phivolcs warned of the possibility of aftershocks in the coming days. It is vital that we remain vigilant and prepared for any further tremors.
In the face of such natural calamities, we are reminded of our shared vulnerability and the importance of staying grounded in faith.
The God of the Universe, who is all-powerful and sovereign over all, provides comfort and strength during times of uncertainty.
We must turn to Him in prayer, seeking His guidance, protection, and mercy. Let us remember that, while we cannot control the forces of nature, we can always call upon the Creator to help us to plot a course through challenging times.
In addition to prayer, we must also equip ourselves with the knowledge and preparedness to save lives should an earthquake occur. Here are some basic approaches to ensure our safety:
1. Drop, Cover, and Hold On: When an earthquake strikes, drop to the ground to avoid being knocked over, take cover under sturdy furniture if possible, and hold on until the shaking stops. This simple, proven method can significantly reduce injury.
2. Stay Indoors: If you are inside a building, stay there. Move away from windows, glass, and heavy objects that could fall during the shaking. Do not rush outside, as falling debris poses a greater risk.
3. Check for Hazards: Once the shaking subsides, carefully check for hazards like gas leaks, fires, or structural damage. Evacuate the building only when it is safe to do so.
4. Listen for Updates: Pay attention to official news and updates from local authorities. Follow evacuation orders if necessary, and be prepared for possible aftershocks.
5. Emergency Kit: Always have an emergency kit stocked with essentials such as food, water, first-aid supplies, flashlights, and a portable phone charger.
In times of disaster, it is good to stay calm, stay informed, and act prudently. Let us all take these steps seriously, and remember that by trusting in God and being prepared, we can face the challenges of the natural world with resilience and hope.
May we continue to pray for His protection and care over our nation, and may we remain steadfast in our faith, even in the face of uncertainty.
