EDITORIAL: Makabayan Bloc

AS the 2025 elections approach, the political landscape is starting to take shape with significant movements and strategic alliances being formed.

The Makabayan bloc, represented by ACT Teachers Partylist Rep. France Castro, has announced plans to field 12 senatorial candidates. This ambitious move signals the bloc’s intent to make a substantial impact in the upcoming elections.

Rep. Castro, who herself is running for senator, highlighted the bloc’s commitment to including candidates from marginalized sectors. This inclusive approach aims to ensure that the voices of all Filipinos, especially those from underrepresented communities, are heard in the Senate.

The Makabayan bloc’s strategy also involves discussions with other opposition groups to form a united front. As Castro mentioned, these talks are ongoing and include major players like the Liberal Party.

Rep. Arlene Brosas of Gabriela Women’s Party, another key member of Makabayan, reiterated the bloc’s openness to alliances with “true opposition” groups. This collaborative effort underscores the bloc’s desire to consolidate opposition forces to strengthen their position against the ruling parties.

On the other side, the Liberal Party, led by Albay 1st District Rep. Edcel Lagman, is also gearing up for the elections. Lagman has indicated that the party might field up to six senatorial candidates. By limiting their number of candidates, the Liberal Party aims to concentrate their resources and enhance their chances of success.

Meanwhile, the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas, chaired by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., is fortifying its position through an alliance with Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats, the Nationalist People’s Coalition, and the National Unity Party. This coalition highlights the intricate web of alliances that will play a crucial role in the upcoming elections.

The official filing of candidacies in October will further clarify the political battlefield. As these alliances and candidate lists solidify, the 2025 senatorial race promises to be a defining moment in shaping the future political landscape of the Philippines.
