Egay initial damage in Bicol placed at P62M
LEGAZPI CITY --- Almost PHP62 million worth of infrastructure and non-infrastructure assets were damaged by Typhoon Egay-enhanced southwest monsoon in the Bicol Region, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) reported on Monday.
In an interview, Gremil Alexis Naz, OCD-Bicol spokesperson, said the initial consolidated damage reports came from the Department of Education (DepEd) and local government units (LGUs) affected by the weather disturbances.
“DepEd Bicol reported that 12 schools were destroyed by Egay-enhanced southwest monsoon. Five were partially destroyed and seven facilities were totally damaged with a total cost of PHP52 million,” Naz said.
He said three LGUs reported non-infrastructure damages to furniture, electronics \and educational materials in schools.
“Schools in Polangui in Albay and Baleno and Cawayan towns, all in Masbate province incurred a total of PHP9.9 million (damage),” he said.
Meanwhile, a total of 94 houses were damaged in Vinzons, Camarines Norte due to a reported tornado. Fifteen were destroyed while 79 were partially damaged.
Naz said they are still waiting for other agencies to submit the assessment of the extent of other damages, particularly in agriculture.
OCD-Bicol also recorded 11 related incidents of flooding and rain-induced landslides, aside from the tornado.
All 87 families or 342 individuals who took shelter in different evacuation centers were already allowed to go back home.
A total of PHP5.6 million worth of assistance was provided to the affected families and individuals by the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the LGUs. (PNA)
