Farmers in Naga to benefit from NIA’s irrigation canal

By Paulo DS. Papa

THE National Irrigation Administration (NIA) is exploring the possibility of constructing an irrigation canal near the river situated at Sitio Yabu in Barangay Carolina, here.

LGU Naga’s Acting City Agriculturist Francisco Mendoza said the plan was discussed in a meeting with NIA and Mayor Nelson Legacion who said the proposed facility will provide additional water supply for rice farms in the barangays of Carolina, Pacol and San Felipe.

He said that NIA is ready to finance the project and that the funds for its construction will soon be released once the study has been completed.

The LGU on its part, will submit the documents required by the National Water Resources Board so that it can permit the city government to benefit from the water the NIA will supply to the rice fields in the area.

He said the facility will be constructed at the left side of the road leading to Barangay San Felipe.

In addition, the local government unit allotted P2 million to repair the irrigation canal in Barangay Pacol and San Felipe.

Mendoza said that another P800,000 was allocated for the reconstruction of the canal in Zone 1 and 2, Barangay Carolina.

He assured that water supplies for rice farmlands in the area will be sufficient despite the dry season.
