LEGAZPI CITY --- The Bureau of Fire Protection in Bicol (BFP-5) is under “full alert” status during the holidays to ensure that all fire stations can promptly react to fire alarms.

Fire Senior Superintendent Achilles Santiago, the acting director of BFP-5, announced that the alert status has been raised starting December 5, and will remain in effect until January 15, 2026.

Santiago reported deploying 2,471 personnel in the region, with all BFP-5 firefighting equipment and vehicles on standby, including 258 fire trucks, 48 ambulances, and 11 rescue vehicles.

Personnel from the BFP have been assigned to malls and public areas, where they will remain on duty until Jan. 15 next year.

Additionally, ambulances have been strategically prepositioned to ensure a quick response when needed.

Santiago explained that the fire stations and sub-stations throughout the region will be supported by over 3,000 community fire auxiliary brigades that have been activated by local barangays.

These brigades have prepared community fire protection plans, he added.

He emphasized the need for heightened alertness, particularly because people commonly use firecrackers to celebrate Christmas and ring in the New Year.

According to Santiago, the use of firecrackers is one of the main contributors to fires during the holiday season.

He urged the public to consider safer alternatives to firecrackers, such as using torotots, clappers, musical instruments, and party poppers to create noise during celebrations.

Furthermore, Santiago advised the public to use only certified safe Christmas lights and decorations, avoid overloading electrical outlets, and never leave cooking food unattended.

He also noted that weak fire prevention efforts can lead to challenges in fire suppression and investigation. (PIA Bicol)
