TINAMBAC, Camarines Sur --- A 67-year-old fishpond caretaker may face either a murder or homicide charge after shooting dead a 26-year-old man who allegedly intruded into a fishpond in Barangay New Caaluan on Sunday, August 17.

Police identified the suspect as “Pay Padong,” caretaker of the fishpond, while the victim was named Rustan, a resident of Barangay Bagacay, Tinambac. Rustan reportedly entered the fishpond along with three companions to steal mud crabs (ani-it) and milkfish.

Upon seeing the group, the caretaker allegedly drew a .357 Magnum revolver and fired at them. Rustan was hit and fell into the water, while his companions escaped.

Tinambac police chief PMaj. Glen Aluniz said the caretaker voluntarily surrendered along with the firearm, admitting that the gun was unlicensed and unregistered. Despite his admission, investigators are conducting further inquiries to validate his statement.

Rustan’s family has expressed intent to file a case against the caretaker. “The case may be murder or homicide depending on the results of our investigation,” Aluniz said.
