Flood in the eyes of a grade-6 schooler

By Willen A. Abriol

Last October 22, 2024 was the night to remember. I recall seeing floodwater entering the gates of my grandma’s house. At that time, we were staying there while my parents were at the hospital for my grandmother’s operation.

Slowly, the water crept into the house. When it started reaching the first step of the stairs, I texted my parents about the situation. My mother started to panic. I, on the other hand, just felt calm. Yes, it is my first time, but I knew God is there and will never abandon us.

I had several questions in my mind. Is this a result of man’s selfishness because there were a lot of trash in the water, and passageways were clogged because of it? Is it because of man’s ability for life’s improvement like land use and urbanization? or is it because of climate change caused by global warming? The answer: All.

Nonetheless, I think what must be done in order to prevent this from happening are improving our drainage systems, sustainable urban planning, to clean all canals and rivers to lessen chances of a flood. Addressing flood problem is a combined effort of all people, communities and the government. We may not eliminate flooding and the risks entirely, but having this measures can help reduce the impact. Most importantly, discipline is the way to prevent this, as people just throw trash everywhere. In the end, who are to blame? Us, people.
