Gun ban violator nabbed in Masbate

The Police Regional Office in Bicol (PRO5) reported one arrest on Sunday, Jan. 9, in relation to the nationwide election gun ban.
Maj. Malu Calubaquib, PRO5 spokesperson, identified the suspect as Joem Oliva, 38, a resident of Barangay Daplian in San Fernando, Masbate.
“While conducting the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and Philippine National Police (PNP) checkpoint in San Jacinto Masbate, particularly in front of Chuchay Videoke Bar, the owner of the establishment informed the personnel manning the checkpoint that the suspect deposited his caliber. 45 pistol at the counter of the bar upon seeing the presence of the PNP personnel,” Calubaquib said.
The operating team immediately approached the suspect and requested for pertinent documents.
The suspect failed to produce any, prompting his arrest.
Oliva was taken to the San Jacinto Municipal Police Station for proper disposition.
Calubaquib said 120 checkpoints are set up and operating in the 107 municipalities and 12 cities of the Bicol region.
Any Comelec offense, Calubaquib noted, shall be penalized with imprisonment of not less than one year but not more than six years and shall not be subject to probation.
“At checkpoints, motorists are advised to slow down, dim their headlights, turn on their cabin lights, and allow visual search. You don’t have to open your glove compartment or truck, you don’t have to step out of your vehicle, and you don’t have to submit yourself to a body search,” she added. (PNA)
