CLAVERIA, Masbate --- The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) of Claveria, Masbate initiated a training to better equip emergency responders in handling natural or human-induced emergencies.
Claveria Mayor Froilan Andueza said they provided Basic Incident Command System (ICS) training to government personnel to ensure their readiness in managing emergencies and coordinating response efforts.
The event brought together 40 representatives from municipal government offices, national agencies and barangay officials who are integral members of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
Claveria is located on the relatively isolated Burias Island, one of the three main islands in Masbate province.
The town is prone to earthquakes as it lies just 2.2 km southwest of the Burias segment of the Philippine Fault, according to a hazard assessment report by HazardHunterPH app of the Department of Science and Technology.
The same report stated that parts of the municipality are susceptible to rain-induced landslides.
The area is also susceptible to ashfall spewed by Mayon Volcano located in Albay.
MDRRMO head Geronimo Gueta Jr. stressed the importance of the training in enhancing their readiness and response efforts.
“This training is of great help to us. It equips our team with the necessary skills and knowledge to manage emergencies effectively and coordinate response efforts,” Gueta said.
Personnel from the Office of Civil Defense in the Bicol region facilitated the training from April 24-26.
Participants learned about command structure, communication protocols, and resource management through interactive exercises and simulated scenarios.
Carolyn Gulpan, a hospital employee with 36 years of government service, was among the participants at the event.
In her remarks, Gulpan expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to undergo such training.
“I am glad to have this kind of training in my life. It enhances our ability to respond to emergencies efficiently and ensures the safety of our community,” said Gulpan.
Andueza commended the participants for their commitment to emergency response training.
“Investing in activities like this shows our dedication to ensuring safety,” he said.
The ICS training marked a significant milestone in strengthening the community’s resilience against hazards, he added. (PIA5)
