GUINOBATAN, Albay --- The Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) conducted a series of disaster relief operations for families affected by the Mayon Volcano eruption on May 8, 9, and 10 this year, bringing essential aid to hard-hit communities in Albay province.

The massive humanitarian relief operation was conducted in Barangay Quirangay, Camalig, and Barangay San Rafael, Guinobatan in Albay, bringing food, water, and essential supplies to families affected by the recent Mayon Volcano activity. It was supported by members and officers of Lions Club District 301-A2, led by District Governor Apolinario “Pol” Cortez, together with cabinet officers, regional chairpersons, and zone chairpersons who actively participated in the outreach efforts.

Relief goods were distributed to the residents, providing immediate assistance to displaced and affected families. Among the items distributed were nebulizers, N-95 masks, broomsticks, dustpans, shovels, diapers, sanitary napkins, rice, and canned goods.

More than 500 families, or approximately 2,300 individuals, benefited from the community outreach program, which aimed to address both health and basic household needs in the aftermath of the volcanic activity.

Cortez spearheaded the effort, coordinating the deployment of relief goods and volunteers from Metro Manila and Bicol-based Lions clubs. He was joined by key district officers, including Cabinet Secretary Eloisa Esquilon Olivera, NCR zone chairpersons, and various committee heads overseeing service, logistics, and documentation.

He said the mission reflects the Lions’ core commitment: “Lead to serve and serve to lead.” He also expressed gratitude to participating clubs and volunteers for their swift response and dedication in reaching affected families.

Local officials were present during the distribution, including Camalig Vice Mayor Marian Ahrdail Baldo and Guinobatan Mayor Ann Gemma Ongjoco, along with municipal councilors, barangay leaders, and personnel from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). Their presence helped ensure the orderly and efficient distribution of relief goods.

A major logistical effort was noted in the unloading of more than 1,200 bottles of 8-liter mineral water from a high dump truck, carried out with the assistance of Camalig and Guinobatan police personnel, who were commended for their endurance and coordination throughout the operation.

Various Lions clubs from Metro Manila and Bicol participated in the mission, including partner clubs from San Pablo, Pasay, Muntinlupa, Cavite, Daet, Legazpi, Tabaco, Sorsogon, and Bulan, among others, reinforcing nationwide solidarity in disaster response.

Organizers from Lions District 301-A2 thanked all working committees and volunteers for ensuring that relief packs reached affected families efficiently and with care. They emphasized that the mission stands as a testament to collective action in times of disaster.

The operation concluded with appreciation extended to all partners and volunteers, reaffirming Lions Clubs International’s commitment to humanitarian service and community resilience amid Mayon Volcano’s continuing activity.

Also present and actively involved in the relief operations were Lioness Helen Molar, treasurer; and Region 5 chairpersons including Lion Dr. Eric Pabico, Lion Gerry Li, Lioness Maria Theresa Chua, Lion Leonardo Visperas, Lioness Eve Barrios, and Lion Steve Sia, along with other dedicated members such as Carrie Toledo Villanueva, Lion Cesar Ballano, Imee Vosotros, Harle Violet Imperial, Ed Barrios, Trixie Sia, Pauline Dy, Yvonne Yau, and Bong Ebrada.
