Let Justice Roll

The recent election of our own former Bicolana senator and Mamamayang Liberal Partylist first nominee Leila De Lima into Congress, and her newly-given assignment as special prosecutor in the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte might be called poetic irony or poetic justice. I am sure the upcoming impeachment proceedings will be viewed all over the country like a telenovela, but one could say it is definitely justice starting its roll. More than this, however, Congresswoman de Lima’s win is a celebration of a woman’s resilience, whose testament to courage was strong, bold, and unflinching, Even beyond the walls of prison her spirits soared and her light never grew dim. Perhaps this victory is now her freedom’s song of celebration. She will now be joining the minority together with Congressman-elect Chel Diokno of Akbayan partylist, and Senators-elect Bam Aquino and Kiko Pangilinan, a welcome turn of events of course for Senator Risa Hontiveros.

It would seem that this may yet be a season of justice not only for the country but for the world as well, with the election of a new Pontiff in the person of American Pope Robert Francis Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV. In his early speeches he has hinted that his pontificate may be one that will pursue lasting peace based on justice, specifically mentioning the rights of the Ukrainian people and saying that they are close to his heart, and everyone in society who are disadvantaged. We have all hoped that the new Pope would carry on the legacy of the late Pope Francis, and we have not been disappointed.

Hope springs eternal, as they say. And so in these crossroads both as a Church and as a nation, we hope and pray for the best.
