Lions Club leads coastal clean-up at Bagasbas
By Jason B. Neola
LIONS Club International conducted its annual coastal clean-up in over 200 countries, including the Philippines, as part of its global climate mitigation initiative.
In Daet, Camarines Norte, a similar activity, which was conducted on Saturday, September 28, starting 6 o’clock in the morning, was undertaken by the Daet 103 Service Lions Club led by President Dr. Eric Pabico along with the LGU Daet and the village officials of Barangay Bagasbas.
The event, focused on maintaining clean seas and reducing environmental pollution, saw volunteers collect around 150 kilograms of waste, primarily plastics, which pose a threat to marine life and human health. The event was also made possible through collaboration with the Office of the Municipal Mayor, and the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO).
“Our goal is not only to clean but also to protect and preserve our environment,” Pabico said.
Pabico emphasized the need for proper waste disposal, particularly the harmful effects of plastics, which break down into microplastics that contaminate food chains, which is the sequence of organisms through which nutrients and energy pass as one organism eats another in an ecosystems.
“We must remember that the world is not a giant trash bin where we can throw our waste anywhere. Garbage must be disposed of properly in bins, especially plastics, which are carcinogenic and harmful to both marine life and humans,” he said.
The activity was supported by officials from the LGU Barangay of Bagasbas, the municipality of Daet, the Office of the Municipal Mayor, and the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO).
Pabico said that the Lions International coastal clean-up not only serves as a vital step in the fight against climate change but also underscores the power of collective action in safeguarding the environment for future generations.
He thanked the Lions Club members, including Charter President Arnel Lagatuz, Edith Lagatuz, Ronald Dy, TJ Dy, Immediate Past President Danilo Victoria, and Dr. Amelia Abordo-Paguirigan, for their participation.
In October, the Daet 103 Lions Club will visit Don Emiliano Pabico Elementary School and Pabico-Abordo Elementary School to conduct oral health education and fluoride treatments for students.
