LRay to lead study on transfer of House ofc to BGC
THE House of Representatives has appointed Camarines Sur 2nd District Rep. Luis Raymund “LRay” Villafuerte Jr. as the chairman of the ad hoc committee responsible for examining the potential relocation of House offices from Batasan Hills, Quezon City, to Bonifacio Global City (BGC).
In a statement on Sunday, Villafuerte explained that the move aims to enhance communication and coordination between lawmakers from both chambers, streamlining legislative work.
The resolution, adopted on Nov. 13, 2023, emphasized the near completion of the New Senate Building in BGC.
Currently situated at the Batasang Pambansa complex in Quezon City, the House aims to explore relocation possibilities while the Senate resides in the Government Service Insurance System complex in Pasay City.
Referencing historical context, the resolution noted that the House and Senate previously operated in the Legislative Building, coining the terms “upper house” and “lower house.”
The old legislative building, now housing the National Museum of Fine Arts, was located in Ermita, Manila.
As president of the National Unity Party, Villafuerte outlined the committee’s focus on matters related to the relocation, encompassing the study and construction of a new House of Representatives building.
The resolution highlighted key considerations, including efficient public transport, connectivity to major thoroughfares, airports, and proximity to government agencies, multinational corporations, local businesses, and tech startups.
Villafuerte, along with Senior Deputy Speaker Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales Jr. and House Deputy Majority Leader David “Jay-Jay” Suarez, filed the resolution on Oct. 17, 2023. Gonzales and Suarez will serve as the ad hoc committee’s vice persons.
