LEGAZPI CITY, Albay --- The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) has sold close to 2,000 kilograms of affordable rice to the residents of Barangay (village) Gogon in Legazpi City.

Village Head Ma. Theresa Naz thanked the NIA for selling 30 bags (60-kg bag) of the “Bagong Bayaning Magsasaka” (BBM) rice at P29/kg to her constituents.

The sale of affordable rice was part of Serbisyo Caravan, a convergence of the national and local governments and community partners that enabled the more than 6,000 residents of Gogon to access essential services often beyond their reach.

Residents took advantage of various services offered by 18 participating government agencies, including free medical check-ups, anti-rabies vaccination of pets, tree seedlings, registration for their National IDs, and driving lessons.

They also took advantage of discounts offered by 10 private companies for their products.

Naz expressed gratitude to all participating agencies for their commitment to the community’s needs, saying, “the people of Gogon are deeply thankful for being heard and served.”

Resident Kerce Ballares expressed his appreciation for the initiative after buying affordable BBM rice.

“Mura ang bilihin, lalo na ang bigas,” Ballares said.

The Albay branch of NIA said the BBM rice was sourced from the agency’s contract farming program.

Under this program, an irrigators association receives cash and farm input subsidies for every hectare of rice field.

Upon harvest, the farmer will deliver five metric tons of palay to NIA. (PIA Bicol)
