LEGAZPI CITY --- The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) 5 (Bicol) has raised its alert status and operational readiness to manage the massive influx of passengers expected for Undas 2025.
PCG-5 Commander, Commodore Ivan Roldan, said Tuesday that they have intensified Vessel Safety Enforcement Inspections (VSEI) to ensure all vessels comply with safety standards set by the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA).
Roldan said the VSEI is an important step to ensure that vessels are safe and in good condition before being allowed to sail. Approximately 120 to 150 vessels, including roll-on/roll-off ferries and fast crafts, are expected to ferry passengers along various routes throughout Bicol this Undas.
He added that the PCG would implement heightened security and safety operations in all ports, terminals, and waterways from Oct. 30 to Nov. 4.
More than 450 Coast Guard personnel are on standby to provide security, implement safety measures, and respond to emergencies.
These security teams include augmentation from the Special Operations Group, Maritime Safety Services Unit, and Coast Guard K9 and Medical Teams. Nine land assets and 17 water assets are also prepositioned and ready for immediate mobilization to support operational activities.
Roldan said the PCG is strictly enforcing a no-overloading policy, proper passenger manifest verification, and random inspection of ships and life-saving appliances.
He also reminded passengers to plan their trips early and monitor weather updates, as the Coast Guard will automatically cancel sea travel if Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 is raised.
PCG-5 expects 30,000 to 35,000 passengers to pass through major ports this Undas season.
Meanwhile, the regional office of the Land Transportation Office (LTO) has also deployed law enforcement officers to ensure safe, orderly, and smooth travel for all motorists and passengers.
LTO-5 Director Allan Castillejos said officers are on the ground conducting roadside and terminal inspections.
Castillejos said these checks focus on the roadworthiness of vehicles and verifying drivers' fitness to operate.
He thanked all partner agencies, terminal operators, and the riding public for their cooperation during the operations. (PNA)
