LEGAZPI CITY --- Improvements in Philippine National Railways (PNR) stations continue to enhance accessibility and ensure faster and safer transportation for Bicolano commuters.
PNR General Manager Deovanni Miranda inspected the various train stations in Daraga, Travesia, and Camalig, all in Albay, on Friday to see the actual situation of the trains, railways, and passengers.
In an interview after the inspection at the Daraga station, Miranda said this move is in line with the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to provide passengers comfortable travel.
“Our train service from Naga to Legazpi and from Legazpi to Naga is now operational. We are working on increasing the number of trains available,” he said, citing the challenges such as Severe Tropical Storm Kristine (international name Trami) and a landslide in Quezon.
Miranda said train coaches are now available and these will be brought from Manila this year.
He also underscored the contribution of local governments, villages, and schools in educating the public about railway safety.
“We need to inform the public about the risks and dangers associated with rail operations, whether they are residents or merely crossing at railroad intersections. Our goal is to provide sufficient information and education to our community to address these incidents, and moving forward, we are committed to this effort,” he added.
New station
PNR inaugurated on Thursday a PHP4.9-million station in Pili, Camarines Sur, which caters the highest number of passengers in the region.
Miranda said the new station has more than 100-meter long covered platform, tactile pathways for the visually impaired, a breastfeedng station, two restrooms, and airconditioned offices for the personnel.
He said the public can now include PNR as an option for affordable, clean, and accessible means of transportation. (with reports from Lily Nocomora and Kryselle Jesa Perez, OJTs/PNA)
