Police probe student abduction on social media

THE Naga City Police Office is conducting a thorough investigation into a series of alleged student abductions that have been widely circulated on social media.

Police Colonel Erwin Rebellon, director of the Naga City Police, told the press on Monday morning that an initial investigation has already been conducted, though he withheld specific details. He assured the public that a final report would be released once a comprehensive study of the cases is completed.
One of the reported incidents involves a 27-year-old deaf student from Camarines Sur National High School. According to a social media post by a user identified as “San Kwan,” the student was allegedly forced into a white van by several individuals last week.
The post further claimed that the student managed to escape in Libmanan, Camarines Sur, when the vehicle stopped to abduct another student. A photo accompanying the post showed the student appearing exhausted, with mud stains on his school uniform.
Despite the online uproar, police authorities have cast doubt on the claims, citing the absence of CCTV footage or any concrete evidence confirming actual kidnappings in the city. Colonel Rebellon suggested that the sudden emergence of these reports, coinciding with the ongoing election period tells that there is a hidden motive or plan that is not entirely trustworthy.
The police chief urged the public to exercise caution and responsibility when sharing information on social media. He warned that individuals spreading unverified reports that cause unnecessary panic could face legal consequences, including charges of cybercrime and cyber libel.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation and encourage residents to report suspicious activities directly to the police rather than relying solely on social media posts.
