Police probers clueless on BU campus bomb suspects

By Mar S. Arguelles

Philippine National Police (PNP) probers are still facing a blank wall on who were the people responsible for hurling two bombs that exploded at the Bicol University (BU) Campus here on Sunday (Oct.1) night.

Major Maria Luisa Calubaquib, Bicol police spokesperson, said the investigation is still in progress as of press time.

Report from the Legazpi City police station said two successive loud explosions were heard within the BU Campus grounds at around 6:30 PM.

The report said the explosions that took place at the campus grounds were several meters away from the PNP checkpoint at the boundary of Legazpi City and Daraga town near Camp Simeon Ola.

The first explosions took place at the grounds in front of the Ricardo Arcilla Building (former GASS Building) while the second blast was at a ground near the building of the Supply

Management Office, Provincial Disaster Management Office (PDMO), and the BU Guestel.

Investigators from the PNP Explosive and Ordnance Division (EOD) found at the BU grounds a spent shell from 40mm grenade.

The incident prompted the PNP to declare and place all police units in Albay under a full red alert status.

As this developed, Arnulfo Mascarinas on Monday, Oct. 4, issued a memorandum suspending work at the BU campus and Daraga Campus.

The memorandum also directed all personnel to be on Work from Home arrangement beginning Oct. 4, which according to Mascarañas would give way for inspection of all the premises of the campuses as well as for a thorough investigation of the authorities.
