POTENTIAL NUCLEAR FUEL RESOURCE: Uranium source found in Camarines Norte

Scientists have confirmed the presence of uranium in the Bessemer area of the Larap-Paracale mining district in Jose Panganiban, Camarines Norte, a discovery that could support the Philippines’ plans to expand its nuclear energy program.

The Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI), University of the Philippines and Akita University in Japan conducted the study in an area where uranium exploration dates back to the 1950s.

Uranium, commonly associated with “yellowcake” after processing, is a key material in the nuclear fuel cycle. The finding comes as the Philippines pursues plans to add 1,200 megawatts of nuclear power capacity by 2032 and 2,400 MW by 2035.

The PNRI, however, said the uranium identified so far is limited to surface samples. Further studies are needed to determine whether the deposit is large and high-grade enough to have economic value.

Scientists plan to conduct geological, radiometric and geophysical surveys, followed by drilling and core analysis to determine the size and quality of the potential resource.

The discovery does not immediately mean that the Philippines can produce nuclear fuel locally. Scientists said additional studies would be needed to determine the feasibility of mining, including costs, environmental impacts, regulatory requirements and possible concerns of communities in the area.

The development comes as President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has pushed for the revival and expansion of the country’s nuclear energy program amid concerns over long-term energy security.

Scientists stressed that considerable research and assessment would still be required before any uranium resource in Camarines Norte could be considered for commercial development.
